As Kevin heard Jeffery begin to descend the stairs at the far end of the hall he pulled his cell out of his pocket. Dropping his bag on the bed he dialed Lee. She picked up on the second ring, “Hey Kevin. Am I to take this to mean you made it to Elkridge without any major problems?” she asked sweetly.
He sighed glancing at the door, “No more problems than I expected when you sent me out here. I can’t believe I agreed to this. I must have been out of my mind to let you talk me into this, dear sister of mine.”

Lee’s laugher only served to irritate him, “You went up there because I needed to stay here and deal with the lawyers.”
“Lee Ann, you brat. We both know the lawyers would have waited.” He snapped.
Her voice was tight with old anger, “Just the same as we both know you agreed to go up there without a fight and why.”

Kevin walked over and shut the door. This was not a conversation he wanted anyone to hear. “I’m sorry. Ten years of phone calls and cards at Christmas was enough. I can’t take it anymore.” The pain coloring his voice was enough to worry even himself.
“Kevin, sweetie that’s why I gave you this week. At least you can be close. It’s something and it’s more than you have had in the last ten years.” She told him knowing that while it helped it had to be killing him inside.
“If only I could say something. But it would destroy everything if I did. I mean in addition to a week of business meetings I’m staying with Jeffery at the cliff house instead of at the hotel.” He was fighting tears.
Lee gasped, “I’m sorry Kev. I didn’t think he would invite you to stay at the cliff house. I figured he would have you stay at the palace and you would only see him at the meetings.” Her words sounded hollow even to her own ears.
“I passed the wedding invite along to John, it looks like he will even try to make it.”

“What about Jeffie, how did he take the news?” she asked sounding a bit nervous.
“he’s happy for you. I think he got over you dumping him a long time ago.” He told her wondering about what Jeffery had meant when he said there were things he hadn’t gotten over.
“I’m glad, I would never want to hurt him.”
“Neither would I, but I’ve been here less than an hour and I’m already starting to wonder if I will last the week with my sanity.” Kevin told her glancing at the door not sure if he was glad Jeffery was downstairs or if he wanted the man to bust through the door and demand to know what was going on.
“You will last just fine, He doesn’t have any idea how you feel. Nothing will happen to cause you any problems as long as you keep your mouth shut and your hands to yourself. You lasted through all of high school you can last a simple week.” She snapped at him,

He took a deep breath and tried again, “Do you know how hard senior year was for me? To say nothing of prom night.” The pain in his voice making it thick and heavy.
“yeah I know. You two getting drunk at the party was not a good idea. I’m sorry for everything that happened that night.” Her words were a mean whisper.
Kevin let out a self loathing laugh, “You don’t have anything to be sorry about.”
“Right. You take your sister to prom only to get sloshed with Jeffery and end up curled up on a couch with him making out. I knew how you felt about him, I shouldn’t have let you get so drunk.” She laughed.
“Hardest part of the whole night was when he walked away. I don’t think I have every hurt so much in my life.” Kevin laughed to himself, “I don’t think he even knew who he had been kissing. Jeffery looked so upset and hurt when everyone started laughing at us.”

“I don’t think he remembers much about that night. He was a little more than out of it when he stumbled out that night.” She told him, “Now I have enough brains to know that you are hiding in that room talking to me so you don’t have to deal with him, so I’m going to let you go. Get downstairs and enjoy the wonders of the Cliff House. You have always loved the place as much as Jeffie.”
“You’re right. I’ll give you another call after the first meeting to let you know how things are going.”
“Sounds good Kev. Just remember its only a week and he doesn’t know.” Lee didn’t think either fact would help much, but it was something. She hung up leaving him with silence. He sighed and laid his phone down on the little table next to the bedroom door. Drawing all the strength he had into a wall around his heart he opened the door.
The hallway was as empty as it had been when he closed the door. A smile crept across his face as he made his way down the hall. Lee was right, all he needed to do was make the best of the week and enjoy the time he had. John met him at the bottom of the stairs, “I am very glad you could make it Kevin.” The older man smiled.
Kevin looked at him for a moment, “These meetings needed dealt with. Lee couldn’t make it so I was next in line. It’s nothing really.” Kevin was trying to sound casual, but he was failing badly.

“And I know something you don’t.” the smile on John’s face was bright and cheerful. “Your sister set you up. These meetings were originally to have happened at Angel Software’s headquarters. She had them moved out here so she could send you.”
Kevin glared at the older man, “You have to be kidding me, she made it so I had to come out here?” he demanded.
“Yes she did, she wanted you to give you some time with Jeffery. You may not admit to him how you feel, but the rest of us know.” John’s smile was full of humor and love. He had known Kevin nearly as long as he had worked for Jeffery’s family. He loved all three of them as he would love his own children.
Kevin stood there for a moment not sure what to say. “So you approve?” the question was barely a whisper.
With a laugh John replied, “of course I approve. I watched you struggle through high school. You were strong and made most of the right choices, and for your information I approved back then.” He took a step closer. “I actually thought the two of you might get things figured out that night at the party. That is until that boy got so drunk he couldn’t think let alone realize that he was kissing you.”

Kevin felt a ghost of a mile as the memory of prom night and the party slipped through his mind.
The dance had been perfect, even though he had taken his sister as his date. The music had made him smile and all the word they had done made the gym look like a fantasy land. The colors had taken his breath away when they first walked in hand-in-hand. Even seeing Jeffery standing near the edge of the stage flirting with a cute blond hadn’t really dampened his spirits much. After dancing a few dances with some of the random popular girls in class he had talked his sister into letting him leave early for the party one of their friends was having. He spend three or four hours hanging out and drinking with Jeffery, Lee and a few others. It wasn’t until he found himself sitting on the leather couch in the back-room with his arms around Jeffery that he knew things had gone too far. However, at that moment he couldn’t find the strength to pull away from him. The feel of Jeffery’s lips against his own had been more than he could handle. Very quickly things got out of hand and Kevin found himself praying the moment would never end.
He could still feel Jeffery’s arms around him and his fingers tracing over the back of his head as he had deepened the kiss. The sound of John’s voice brought him back out of his memories, “So, you said you were good at Angel Software. You don’t think you are going to move onto something else any longer?”

Knowing he had missed at least part of what John had said he smiled, “I go where life and my heart lead me.” He watched the smile as it covered John’s face.
“Good, then I don’t have a worry in the world.” John told him slowly, “By the way, Jeffery’s in the library.” He walked away smile still in place.
Kevin grinned, ‘Where else would he be?’ he thought to himself, walking toward the library. It had been a long time since he curled up with a good book. His steps slowed as he got close to the door, coming to a complete stop a few feet away letting him attempt to compose himself.
“Come on in, did you forget something John?” Jeffery’s voice came through the doorway.
He stepped up to the door, “I’m not John, but am I still welcome to come in?” he asked his eyes drinking in the sight of Jeffery curled up in a massive black leather wing chair with an old leather bound book in his lap.
Jeffery’s eyes snapped up to look at Kevin standing in the doorway, “Sure, my home is your home. Come in and enjoy the library, I know you are a lover of books.”
Kevin smiled, “Thanks,” He walked on in looking around at the books covering the walls. The place was like heaven to him. “This place is amazing.”
Jeffery couldn’t drag his eyes from Kevin, as he looked over the books in the bookcase. “Its my favorite place in this house. Feel free to come in and ready anytime.” He pulled his eyes from Kevin and looked back down at the book in his lap. He watched Kevin from behind the shield of the book.
Kevin took a copy of one of the classics off the bookcase, and dropped into the leather chair with a sigh. “Its been a long time since I was able to sit down and read anything other than business documents. What time is that meeting tomorrow?”
Jeffery snickered, “The meet and greet is scheduled for two o’clock tomorrow afternoon. I plan on leaving here about noon.” Jeffery answered it was going to be fun for him to get to see Kevin back in the boardroom after so long.
“I’ll be ready.”
“Well I will leave you to relaxing then. I need to make a few phone calls before it gets too late. Jeffery smiled as he stood up, “John knows where to find me if you need me.” The words faded as he walked out of the library. Kevin felt a sad smile form on his face, it was going to be a long week if Jeffery continued to avoid him at every turn. He settled back in the chair and began to read.
